Holiday Season is Over
With the Holiday season officially over, I can move on from what was a much needed break. I have been suffering lately from not only every writer's greatest nemesis, the dreaded writer's block, but I am also struggling with how I want to move the book as I am now almost at the halfway point. I usually try my best to get the creative juices flowing, some exercising I have learned over the years can help, but sometimes this block is so persistent you don't know what to do. Taking some much needed time off has helped a little, after a few days I have found myself filled with ideas, possibly making a few more tweaks to the story to make it feel more fleshed out to me.
So a little more into what this book is about. I have always been a fan of fantasy, but never true High Fantasy. I like magic, but grounded magic. I was never a fan of Harry Potter, and it drew a lot of awkward glances from family and friends, I had no issues with the story, it just wasn't for me. I have read the the Lord of the Rings, and yes it was a fantastic series, but again, not my ideal type of fantasy. I am always on the look out for more, trying to find what I enjoy the most, and I might have mentioned it before, but for some time I stopped reading entirely. It was not until HBO had announced Game of Thrones, and when I saw that it was based off a series, and falling in love with the first teaser trailer, I went out and bought all of the paperbacks that were available. I found myself reading the books at a furious pace, every moment I had free I was nose deep in the material, finding my love again for not only reading, but fantasy.
The immersion into that world was what drew me in, many characters in which I found myself falling in love with, ready to defend their actions against anyone. For those that wonder, I'm Team Targaryen myself. With the TV series long done, I will admit, just like the Queen, I would have burned King's Landing down myself, though I'm sure if George finishes the series, her decision will be framed better. My book is similar to Westeros in the essence that while there is magic, it is limited. You will not find the forest folk, though there will be mentions of them, sadly nothing more than how they exist in our world, a tale of mythology. The book is formatted in the perspective of each individual main character, honestly I liked that format, and for the type of book I am writing, I feel that it will be the best way to tell the tale.
While the setting is in more of the classic Western Medieval time like period, my world is still well connected, intrigue exists in the royal courts throughout the world, and other nations hear the whispers of planning of other nations. The first book of this series primarily focuses on four separate kingdoms, each with their own ambitions, a failing imperial dynasty fighting for its survival against a former supporter. The other two kingdoms, have a massive role to play in this story, obviously I don't want to give much away at this moment, but for those who will someday read the book, keep that in mind.
With 2025 here, the goal is to have the book completed and off with an editor. I have managed to narrow down cover designs artists that I like, and now if all goes well, by the end of the year, this book will finally be ready for purchase, it has been a long road filled with bumps along the way, but I need to get this done, not only for myself, but because my creative mind now demands it.
